Davina:

Hello. Welcome back to the Wealthy Woman Lawyer podcast. I'm so glad you're joining me today because based on the conversations I've had with so many women lawyers already this month, I think you're really gonna love this episode. I'm your host Devina Frederick. And the episode today is 3 calendaring tips to get what you want most in 2025.

Davina:

And it's all about how you use your calendar as a more effective tool to focus on your priorities. I know many of you have been working on your vision for 2025, including scaling your law firm to high 6, 7, or even multiple 7 figures. And you also have been telling me that you want more time and more money to travel, especially to other countries, maybe to buy your dream home or renovate your kitchen or put your kids through college or invest in your future or something else. Many of you are also starting your focused on your health and well-being. You want more time to work out, to meditate, to journal, or just have some me time every week to get your nails or your hair done.

Davina:

And of course, so many moms are telling me that they want to spend more time being present for their children's activities without experiencing a dip in income if they're not working. In all the years I've been coaching, there's one thing I've observed. It is that what we prioritize that we prioritize what we want most, not what we say we want. And I can look at your calendar and your bank statements. You've heard me say this before and tell you what you really prioritize.

Davina:

If your calendar is filled with work, work, work, despite your desire to spend more time with your children and your bank account is filled with entries for Uber Eats instead of spa days or vacations, then your priorities are not what you claim them to be. So let me be clear here. If you love Uber Eats and working all the time and have at it, you will get zero judgment from me. I myself love to work. And if you looked at my calendar, you'll see a lot of work sessions on it.

Davina:

But you'll also see my workout every day. I go to the gym. My dinner's out with my husband, my lunches or my walks in nature with my friends. I love to eat out, even though for health reasons, I'm pretty disciplined about my diet and majority of time we eat at home, but you will see those things on my calendar. You'll also see trips to see my family in Florida and prescheduled vacation days for the upcoming year, even if I don't know where we're gonna go yet.

Davina:

So here's my number one tip. If you want a 2025 that genuinely reflects who you wanna be, put yourself on the calendar first and schedule everything and everybody else around it. Put your workout days and times on the calendar. Put your kids recitals and soccer practices or cheerleading camp. Put your hair and nail appointments on there, date night with your spouse, put your Pilates class on there.

Davina:

And then here is the key. Hold those commitments to yourself as sacred as you would other commitments to other people. If you do not put yourself on the calendar first and then stick to those commitment, no one else will do it for you. The world is always willing to encroach on your priorities. You'll get asked to serve on a board or volunteer at school or go to brunch every week.

Davina:

If you love doing those things, then do them by all means. If you really want to, but if you don't say no and mean it. Next, put your priorities on a calendar that keep your you and your family fed warm, safe, and dry. So work is not a bad thing from which we need to escape unless we want it to be. It's all about our mindset around work.

Davina:

I grateful every day for my clients and my business. I am an entrepreneur. I am brimming with ideas. I love to work. Also, I love helping others live their best lives and I love the monetary and emotional reward that contributes to my quality of life.

Davina:

So number 2 is to put your work priorities on your calendar, your zone of genius, your highest and best use of your time priorities, and then delegate as much of the rest as possible. Will there be days that you'll have to do a few things that you prefer not to do? Probably, because that's life. Life is not always doing everything you will have to do every minute of the day. However, if you're a highly educated, highly accomplished law firm owner as you are, then you have both the power and the privilege to hire others to help you with the mundane or the minutiae or even more highly skilled positions that you may need.

Davina:

In fact, not only should you hire other people to help you, but you must hire other people if you want to elevate your law firm business to the point that you can leave it without worrying that everything will fall to the crack in your absence. As a law firm owner, your highest priority is to create, keep, and hold the vision for your law firm, and then develop a team around you that is excited about that vision and is willing to help you achieve it. Doing what must be done to grow a law firm is a top priority. Yes, client work is important. If it doesn't get done correctly and on time, then our law firm will not be profitable and sustainable.

Davina:

However, we do not need to personally be the doer of all things in our business. In fact, you probably are not the best person for most activities in your law firm. I know I'm not the best person for most jobs in my business either. Starting owning and operating a law firm business or any business for that matter is about number 1, creating a profitable wealth generating machine that will support you, the shareholder, or the primary shareholder, your family, your employees, and their families. And it's about serving other people in the world and making a bit as big of a positive impact on those people's lives as possible.

Davina:

The more people you have on your team, the better systems and processes are the more significant of an impact you will have. All right. My last tip today, tip number 3, how to use your calendar to create your best year ever is to leave space. This one is controversial. I know Be between your busy schedule and your spouse's if you're married or your children's schedules if you're a parent, it can seem like there's no free time to spare.

Davina:

And if you have free time, you may be doing washing the dishes or laundry or making beds or doing drop offs and pickups or running errands. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. The most successful women I know hire people to help them at home as well as in the office. They hire house cleaners, many drivers for their children. They hire babysitters, yard guys, laundry services.

Davina:

Maybe you can't afford all that right now, or you can't get all those helpers at once. But remember, you can make more money in an hour that you will pay people to help you with those chores at home. As an entrepreneur and a business owner, free space and time to think is critical to your success. Your you need time to dream, to strategize, and relax your mind to receive new information. You need time to invest in yourself as a business person and personally expansion, hearing now, expansion does not happen if there is no space for it to happen.

Davina:

Ever wonder why you get those, your best ideas in the shower or while you're out on a run? It's because you are finally freeing up your mind, allowing it to wander. When you're showering all the pressure is off when you do anything. And when the pressure's off, the mind is not actively stewing over something. And that's when we are open to receiving our best thought and ideas.

Davina:

This year, I really encourage you to be intentional about allowing your mind to have that space to daydream. Put some extra time on your calendar to hike in the woods or sit in your favorite chair and listen to music or meditate or journal, or enjoy a special meditation or prayer space that you've set up in your home. The key to all of these tips is that if you want to make 2025 different, you must be intentional about it. Your calendar is a great tool to help you visualize your day. Of course, none of this works, unless you honor the commitments you make to yourself as much as you honor the commitments you make to others.
