My Favorite Business Books by Women Authors
Davina Frederick: Hi and welcome
to the wealthy woman lawyer
Podcast. I'm Davina Frederick.
And a few months ago on this
podcast I shared with you a list
of books that had been life
changing. For me, there are
books that I've read, that
really helped me to change my
mindset or how I was showing up
in the world, how I thought
about wealth and money, and
improving you know how I
function in business. Now, of
course, I've read hundreds and
hundreds of books, as I'm sure
most of you listening to this
have if you're, if you're
readers, if you love Audible. If
you love Kindle, if you are like
hardback books, if you know me
very well, you'll know that I
have three huge bookcases in my
office, plus all these other
books stacked in other places.
And this is after consistently
cleaning out books. And I also
have, you know, as many on my
Kindle, and in my audible, I
tend to now listen more to books
on audible than I do read. But I
still are those things that I
really want to be able to go
back and highlight and make
notes. And I still buy hardback
books for that purpose. But I
thought today, one of the issues
with that episode I reflected on
as I was gathering the books,
and putting them out there is
that they were all written by
men. And it got me thinking
that, you know, this is the
wealthy woman lawyer podcast.
And so I really wanted to just
call through my collection of
books, and share with you some
books that also helped me in
business that were written by
women, and a diverse number of
women. So I collected if you if
you're watching the video on
YouTube that I'm you'll see the
book, if not, I'll read the
title and the author, and
hopefully I'll pronounce
people's names correctly. But
I'm going to start with coach
yourself to success. And this is
by to lane dander. Think I'm
saying that correctly. And coach
yourself to success. I'll put it
back here. So maybe you guys can
see it sort of holy, it's so
close to the camera, this coach
yourself to success. Let me just
tell you this book. I discovered
before I even knew what coaching
was, this was my entree into the
coaching world and I bought this
book. Back when I was young and
single and living alone and
really had some life goals I
wanted to achieve to Elaine is a
life coach, I got this book when
I was in my 30s Somebody sorry,
let's see 3020s or 30s, late
20s, maybe early 30s. Let me
just say that this copy was
copyrighted in 2000.
She has since probably done some
updated editions of this. But
what I liked about this book
coach yourself to success, it's
one 101 tips for personal from a
personal coach for reaching your
goals in work and life. And
there are some things in this
book that just stick with me
even to this day, I probably
could go back and reread it and
with a different perspective now
and you know, learn a whole lot
more about myself. I haven't
read it in years, but it was a
life changing book for me.
Another book is let go now. And
this is by Karen Casey and I
have bought multiple copies of
this book, I have sent it to
friends I have sent it to
clients. What I love this is
Karen Casey let go now embracing
detachment is the name of it.
Now this book is really written
more with the it's a collection
of essays about the power of
detaching yourself from other
people's business basically. And
it's written from the
perspective of fine of addiction
and overcoming that codependency
and that need to fix other
people and be responsible for
other people. And there is you
can read literally read an essay
a day and there's some pause and
reflect moments that help you.
But this book was instrumental
in helping me a, you know, board
fixer into learning to set
boundaries around myself and my
business and really learn to
separate other people's problems
from my problems and finding out
where even when I'm helping
people solve problems either as
a lawyer or as a coach. It's
really looking for how to
establish those boundaries. And
it works as well with family and
friends as well and really have
some emotional detachment from
taking on other people's
problems as though they are your
own. When you do that you do a
disservice not only to yourself,
but also to the other person who
is on a journey of discovery and
becoming who they are, and the
greatest gift you can give
someone as a friend once told me
is the space and room to solve
their own problem. So, let go
now I give this to people all
the time. Okay? Jensen cero. A
lot of you probably are very
familiar with Jensen Chero this
is you are a badass at making
money. Her original book you are
a badass is somewhere in my
office, but this was the one
that I grabbed from her, you are
a badass, and then you are a
badass making money. What I like
about Jensen cero is she takes a
lot of concepts that I have
learned from other coaches and
other places. But her manner of
delivery is so approachable and
so enjoyable. So I like to
listen to Jen, she reads
herself. I like to listen to her
on Audible while I'm walking. So
I've listened to a number of her
books while I'm out walking
keeps me walking more miles
because I keep listening to her.
And invariably everything that
she says I'm like, yes, yes,
yes. So if you need that
encouragement, and that sort of
resurgence of thinking of
yourself as a badass and maybe
shifting some of your limiting
beliefs and mindset blocks that
you want to get just one of
Jensen Cheras book I recommend
you are a badass, or you are a
badass making money. All right.
Rachael Rogers, if you haven't
heard of Rachael Rogers, you
need to get familiar with who
Rachael Rogers is because this
woman is so inspirational. This
is her book, we should all be
millionaires. It is also the
name of her force. Rachel is
someone who grew up in Queens,
New York. She grew up in
poverty circumstance, and she
has become a multimillionaire
now, and she's done that she is
an attorney for you, Lady
lawyers out there you I know
you're gonna love that. She's a
lawyer, and she built her own
law practice. And she scaled it
to probably high six figures.
And she realized this wasn't
really what she wanted to do.
And so she leveraged her
intellectual property, and began
to create courses. And so now
she coaches other women in how
to become millionaires
themselves. And in particular,
it's a great fit. If you are
somebody who is a course
creator, or you want to be a
course creator, you want to
leverage your intellectual
property, turn it into courses
that you can sell the millions,
that Rachael Rogers, but this is
a great book, it really is kind
of her story. And it's a little
bit of an inspiration,
inspirational. And in
particular, she focuses on women
of color, marginalized groups,
and, and really is someone who
wants to inspire people who've
been marginalized in the past or
currently, and encourage them
and say, Yes, you can't do it, I
did it. If I did it, you can do
it too. And so for, I recommend
this book, highly for you to get
to know her, follow her on all
your socials. Because she's,
I've even in the time that I
have been following her. And I
was enrolled in one of her
courses. The she has grown so
much, even in the amount of time
that I've known her the pandemic
was a huge boon for her
business. And it really scale
quickly. So, if you're a course
creator, that's great for you,
if you're an attorney who wants
to be inspired, if you're a
woman of color, you know, read
this book, if you think all
women should read this book is
very inspiring. Okay, the
Charisma Myth, how anyone can
master the art and science of
personal magnetism. This is by
Olivia Fox Cobain. I hope I say
I hope I'm saying that right.
cabanes see a B, A and E. And
she is French. She wrote this
book and what I really liked
about this is so I I was
somebody you know, coming up in
the world, I've been told that
I'm charismatic and blah, blah,
blah. And I was curious about
and I've always been fascinated
by women like Jackie Yau and
Marilyn Monroe and how they, how
they fascinate as Holly hag
Hogshead would say in her book,
but how people become more
charismatic and how you attract
people to you. And this is a
great book if you want to be a
powerful attractor. A lot of you
may be familiar with Susan
Kane's book quiet the power of
introverts in a world that can't
stop talking. The power of
introverts in a world that can't
stop talking. If you if you are
saying to yourself, Well, I'm an
introvert, it's easier for an
extrovert to get out and network
and meet people and make money.
You need to read Susan Kane's
book quiet because quiet is For
those of us who are introverts
and who think, on some level
that that is a detriment to our
ability to have everything that
we want in the world, because
we're not equal people. And this
book really dispels a lot of
myths about introversion and
extraversion and what it
actually means. So if you have
not read Susan Kane's book,
quiet, this was a huge
bestseller. A number of years
came out a number of years ago.
I'm sure it was probably on
Oprah's book club was two but
Susan Cain, quiet, okay.
Breaking money silence. I
interviewed Kathleen burns,
Kingsbury, Kathleen burns,
Kingsbury on my podcast and
another episode. If you haven't
listened to that, go back and
listen to it. This is her book
breaking money silence, how to
shatter money taboos talk openly
about finances and live a richer
life. Kathleen is absolutely
doing just super intelligent,
delightful to speak with. And I
really enjoyed her book breaking
money silence because, you know,
I think that's one of the things
that keeps women from growing
into their full potential and
wealth is that there's so much
taboo around discussion of
money, particularly in intimate
relationships. And so this is a
great book for you. And then
lastly, on my list, I do have
other books, but I'm gonna wrap
it up today with this one. And
this is Angela, duck or No,
actually, I
have two more I want to share
with you after the sorry about
that. This is Angela Duckworth
and the book is grit. If you
have not read this book, you
want to read this book. This is
the power of passion and
perseverance. So what Angela
Duckworth, who's a psychologist
says that really makes those
successful people stand out from
others is that they have grit.
And grit is kind of this not
only passion, but it's it is
also about being tenacious and
persevering and sort of that not
giving up thing and that's what
really is the standout. So if
you're an entrepreneur, this is
a must read for you, Angela
Duckworth, it's RIT Okay, and
the other two books are just
kind of inspirational books. One
is the way women are. And this
is the transformative opinions
and dissents of Justice Ruth
Bader Ginsburg, the transport to
the transformative opinions and
dissents of Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg the way women are, and
if you have any doubt, why we
need feminism in this country
why women need a special place
to gather and to to come
together as a force to exercise
our power and why we need more
economic power in the world,
then you want to read this
because she any book about Ruth
Bader Ginsburg is worth reading,
because she was such a key
figure in helping women get the
rights that women have today. If
you're not familiar with the
women's movement of the 70s, you
need to get familiar because I
have a feeling we're going to
need to be stepping it up more
and more in in our current state
with the way things are going.
And then lastly, this one is
self made. This is inspired by
the life of madam CJ Walker, it
was written by her I want to say
a niece or grandchild I don't
remember now. But Alia, bundles,
and I don't particularly like
the one with this cover because
there was a TV program or a
movie of this saying that they
took this book and they made it
into a movie. And I didn't care
much for the movie because I
thought it was a little
farcical. And you know, the way
that they did it, I think they
were trying to cram the life of
this woman is very inspirational
woman into a couple of hours.
And I just didn't think that it
came off very well. But I do
recommend reading the book,
Madam CJ Walker, for those of
you do not know is the first
woman millionaire in the United
States. And she also was black
woman, and she created hair
products for women of color. And
so it is truly truly remarkable
that the first woman oftentimes
people think that that black
woman had, you know, would not
have been able to create a
billion dollar business back
during the 1800s which is when
she did at 1900s. But this story
will open your eyes to what life
was like in certain areas or
people of color at that time.
And of course there's a lot of
things that came after that.
That change that dynamic for for
black people. In and white
people in this country as well.
But this is a truly
inspirational story. If you are
a woman in business, I highly
recommend you read this book as
well. So there you go, those are
books by women, books by women,
for women, there are actually
four other for everybody. But I
really thought it was important
to do that. And also, one thing
I noticed as I was going through
my bookcases, and I was sort of
pulling out some favorite books
by women, I realized how so many
of the books in my bookcase, the
vast majority of books that I
have, that are business books,
or marketing books, or
inspirational books, or, you
know, whatever related to
develop, you know, self help and
development are written by men.
And that could be because
there's discrimination in the
publication industry, probably,
that we certainly know it exist
in the movie making industry and
entertainment industry and every
other industry out there. It
exists in the legal industry.
And so I was really disappointed
and how difficult it was to pull
out sort of some, not just books
written by women, but really
famous books, you know, books
that are bestsellers, and known
throughout the world. And so
these, these are some, I invite
you to share with me and to
others, any other books that are
written by women, particularly
women of color, just a different
Asian American women, Native
American women, Hispanic women,
people have different
experiences. If you will share
those books, I would so
appreciate it, share them in the
comments of this video, share
them if you're listening to it
on YouTube, or on Instagram, do
or in Facebook or LinkedIn,
share those comments, share
those book recommendations in
the comments, or you can send
them to me through direct
messaging me on Instagram. And
as I begin to collect more, I'll
do another one of these and
share some other books that are
reader recommendations about
that. So if you're listening to
the podcast, you can connect
with me on Instagram and comment
there or send me a DM it's at
wealthy woman lawyer at wealthy
woman lawyer. So I hope you've
enjoyed this episode, I will
have links to these books in the
show notes of this podcast
episode as well. So you can go
and check them out for yourself.
And I welcome your feedback and
find out what what what you
experienced when you read some
of these books or when you went
looking for women who have
written life changing books.
Also, lastly, I would just say
to you if if you have not
written a book, then that's
something that I encourage you
to do. Write a book because
writing a book not only changes
other people's lives by giving
them information that you have
that they may not have, but it
also changes your life. And
because there's nothing about
learning a subject on a deep
love deep level that will do it
for you other than teaching
others right, which is what the
book writing process is about.
If you would like some help with
the book writing process, reach
out to me. I'm going to share a
link on this podcast. You can I
have a colleague who I've
introduced you to before who has
a writing program. So either DM
me DM me and I will send you
that information if that's
something you're interested in
doing. And I hope you enjoy this
episode. Thanks so much for
being here and listening, going
through my library with me and
hearing some of my favorite
books
